Obituary – Bill McGuirk (1941 – 2026)
1 min readBill McGuirk, who passed away on October 9th, was known and recognised throughout the country for his many years commitment to the sport of athletics generally, and not least to Cross Country running in particular.
Bill gave a lifetime to the sport as an athlete, Technical Official, club and county administrator and athletics journalist for the Newcastle Chronicle and regular contributor to Athletics Weekly and various athletics websites. His service to Cross Country was recognised when nominated by Northern Athletics as ECCA President for the 2015 – 2016 season.
Bill was one of the first people you would meet at Cross Country events, including National and Northern championships, regardless of where in the country they were staged. He frequently managed dual roles as an Official and journalist, usually focussing the latter aspect on North East runners and teams. His knowledge and memory often proved to be encyclopaedic.
It was always a pleasure to meet Bill, usually with his broad smile, and share his enthusiasm for the sport – but trying to avoid discussion on Newcastle United. The last time we saw him at a National CC was at Sedgefield in March with his son. He wasn’t as mobile as usual but still enjoyed the day.
Bill is one of those people who will be remembered for many years to come for his positive approach to life and his sport, and our thoughts are with his wife, Pauline, and their family.
