Obituary – Maureen Smith née Bonanno

We are sorry to advise members of the death of Maureen Smith. As Maureen Bonanno she was a founder member of Highgate Ladies and was their first Treasurer. She was a middle distance runner of high standing and the third runner in the World to go under 5 minutes for the mile and was part of Highgate’s all conquering ladies cross country team of the mid nineteen fifties. Maureen married Dave Smith, a fellow Highgate member, whose work took them abroad.
Upon returning to England Maureen became a track official, rising through the ranks to become a top rank referee. She also served on many committees including Southern and National women’s track and cross country. She was awarded life membership of both.
Upon the merger of men’s and women’s athletics Maureen served on the English Cross Country Association general committee and was President in 2009.
Away from athletics, in a very varied life, Maureen became a Freeman of the City of London and was a guide at St Paul’s Cathedral. Her experience and dedication to athletics and other causes will be missed by many.
