The English Cross Country Association is sad to have received the news that Barry Wallman has passed away.
Barry had been the Honorary Secretary of the ECCU from 1976 to 1988 and then President in 1990/1991. During his involvement with Athletics, Barry was proud to be from Cambridge and lived in the County and was a member of Cambridge and Coleridge AC throughout having started in athletics at School. After representing Cambridgeshire and the Eastern Counties both on the track and in cross country events he took to Administration in 1962 when he became Cambs AAA Cross Country Hon Sec. Barry then took on a whole host of positions for his County, the East and the South before getting involved with the ECCU.
As well as being Hon Sec of the ECCU he was the Union’s Team Manager in 1977-78 and went to the World Cross Championships with the England Team on a number of occasions. He went on to be part of the organising team that staged the World Cross Country Championships at Gateshead in 1983 when he was appointed the Honorary Secretary to the event. Throughout his life Barry was very proud to be part of the Eastern Counties Committees and organised many a National when they were held at Luton. Throughout Barry’s involvement in athletics he was supported by his wife Pat who shared his love of the sport and attended many events.
Outside of Athletics, Barry was very involved in Scouting and was a District Commissioner while also singing in the Church Choir. Barry continued to officiate at both the National Relays and the main Championships to his death and his cheerful personality will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
